About Us

The Eastern Language centre (ELC) is a language program based in Nigeria tailored to independent learners: students, researchers, development workers, missionaries and the military. We seek to support learners’ communication skills as well as their cross-cultural sensitivity so that they can reach their full potential in their position. Our curriculum has been developed over a decade of language teaching experience in Nigeria, with a specific focus on oral/aural language skills. We want students to complete their program with confidence in their ability to speak and understand their target language. Reading and writing are included to support the development of speaking and listening skills.

Our experienced instructors provide students with personalized, interactive classes that vary in size, from individual tutorials to small groups capped at six students. Through this personalized attention, students can expect to rapidly maximize their speaking and comprehension skills. Course content is adapted to respond to the interests and meet the unique needs of each student. Therefore, we can accommodate students of a variety of skill levels in a target language. Independent learners can additionally request that homestays, cross-cultural orientations, academic subjects, thematic visits or excursions, or other specific activities be included in their programs to supplement their language courses.

Class Structure

Language courses are highly flexible and customizable, ranging from intensive instruction (5 hours per day, five days a week) to less arduous weekly schedules. Our goal when organizing learners’ schedules is that we can meet their linguistic and professional needs. Classes are organized based on requests, and 1 to 6 students with comparable language levels can form a class. This 6-person limit allows ELC instructors to commit individual attention to each participant and provides ample speaking and comprehension practice. Classes take place at the Eastern Language Centre locations across Nigeria. Cultural and cross-cultural information are routinely organized and integrated into the language program. More detailed field trips and excursions can be organized upon request.

Consistent practice is key to mastering any language. Make time to practice every day, even if it's just for a few minutes. This will help you build your vocabulary.

Seek out authentic materials like books, songs, movies, and news articles in the target language. This will expose you to the language as it is used by native speakers and help you develop a more natural-sounding speaking and writing style.

Seek out native speakers:

Find native speakers of the language and practice speaking with them. This will help you improve your listening and speaking skills and give you a better understanding of the culture and customs of the people who speak the language.
